About Vamos
In the late 1970’s, Vamos evolved around Pieter van der Kraan, a young and gifted musician and songwriter. In 1980, Pieter died of leukemia, leaving his friends and band members André Swinkels, Sidney Hill and Joy Catsburg devastated. Some twenty years later, they decided it was time for Pieter’s songs to live again. In 2001 they were joined by Sanna and started recording Tribute, thus paying homage to Pieter and his music. Track 2 - I knew you all along on the Songbird album was written for Pieter.
Songbird 1. The Key
I am just an ordinary girl
There’s nothing here to see for all the world
Though I may
Look okay
And it’s nice to hear me sing
There’s no way
That someday
What I do could mean a thing
But I found the key
I know the doorway to your heart
Soon you will see
Turn the corner and you will
Be greater still
I know I become the melody
It’s just the way that I was born to be
It’s this thing
Happening
When my heart is filled with grace
Which I bring
When I sing
And the world falls into place
'Cause I found the key
I know the doorway to your heart
Soon you will see
Turn the corner and you will
Be greater still
And even though my eyes may show
The fears I keep inside
This melody that I’ve become
Keeps me going through the night
'Cause I found the key
I know the doorway to your heart
Soon you will see
Turn the corner and you will
Be greater still
Turn the corner and you will
You'll be greater still

Songbird 2. I knew you all along
(for Pieter)
I never really met you
You were gone before I came
But I found out I could know you
Through your music just the same
I learned you were a person
Who could do most anything
You had dreams like many others
And they always made you sing
I think of you and every time
Those shivers running down my spine
Are telling me to sing your song
I knew you all along, I knew
I knew you all along
I never wrote a song before
I never thought I could
But it’s like your looking at me
Telling me I really should
So here I am, just writing
Hear the music while I do
It is like you are deciding
What words to write for you
I think of you and every time
Those shivers running down my spine
Are telling me to sing your song
I knew you all along, I knew
I knew you all along
Instead of you I write this time
The words now being yours and mine
You’re telling me to sing this song
I knew you all along, I knew
I knew you all along, I knew
I knew you all along

Songbird 3. Real
This heartache is the worst that I have known
My tears keep falling down and I feel lost and so alone
And I will find no comfort in TV or telephone
This heartache is the worst that I have known
And every time it’s getting harder and harder
And the pain will take me farther and farther
Though I know it will make me stronger and stronger
As I walk along this road
All alone, it’s getting clearer and clearer
That my goal is getting nearer and nearer
And my heart is feeling lighter and lighter
And I know
And I know that this is real
This darkness is the darkest that I’ve seen
I am so down, I’m lower than I’ve ever been
An empty heart, my head filled up, I’m somewhere in between
This darkness is the darkest that I’ve seen
And every time it’s getting harder and harder
And the pain will take me farther and farther
Though I know it will make me stronger and stronger
As I walk along this road
All alone, it’s getting clearer and clearer
That my goal is getting nearer and nearer
And my heart is feeling lighter and lighter
And I know
All alone, it’s getting clearer and clearer
That my goal is getting nearer and nearer
And my heart is feeling lighter and lighter
And I know
And I know that this is real

Songbird 4. Lost at all
Is it really that much better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all?
It's hard to find some comfort when you know
You never should have lost at all
For all your endless trying
To have ended up in dying
Makes it look just like you have lost it all
What can we do when a soul is lost?
When they can't seem to find their way at all
What can we do but love them enough
To stand aside and watch them fall
For all your endless trying
Could not stop him from dying
Makes you wonder why you had to loose it all
In this shimmering twilight all seems forever lost
All the love you longed to find so much
But when this darkest night is through, you'll see
You haven't really lost anything at all
Though all your endless trying
Could not stop him from dying
Someday you will stop crying
You'll look up to the sky and
You'll find you haven't really lost anything at all
You'll find you never were that lost at all

Songbird 5. Child of wonder
Child of wonder, day and night
Twin Ray fire burning bright
Newborn baby long ago
So alone, who’d ever know
Songbird singing words unspoken
Of how circles can’t be broken
How we all have angel’s wings
They who listen and they who sing
Dancing with the wind in trees
Speaking softly, She who sees
Whispered promise from afar
We were born on the same star
Songbird singing words unspoken
Of how circles can’t be broken
How we all have angel’s wings
They who listen and they who sing
Lost and found and lost again
Wandering through these shadowed lands
Follow rivers, one way track
From now on there’s no way back
Songbird singing words unspoken
Of how circles can’t be broken
How we all have angel’s wings
They who listen and they who sing
How we all have angel’s wings
They who listen and they who sing

Songbird 6. Baby
If I swallow my tears, baby
Will you swallow your pride
So we don’t have to go to bed angry tonight
If we both turn away, baby
If we never look back
It will be like we’ve never been on the wrong track
Will you fix me a drink, baby
Will you polish my shoes
Is there any way out of this heartbreaking blues
Shall I call the neighbours, baby
Will you make me yell out
Until someone comes checking what the noise is about
But somehow this love
was just never enough
Or maybe, oh baby, it wasn’t love at all
Can I sing you a song, baby
Put a smile on your sweet face
And make you think back about all the good days
You know that I need you, baby
I know that you care
You never show it but it’s gotta be there
Or somehow this love
was just never enough
Or maybe, oh baby, it wasn’t love at all
I’ve tried for so long, baby
I do hope you know
But there’s nothing left to do here but to go
I want you to go, baby
Just leave me today
We are done and you’ve run out of reasons to stay
I want you to go, baby
Get out of my head
So I can stop fighting your memory instead
But somehow this love
was just never enough
Or maybe, oh baby, it wasn’t love at all
Oh somehow this love
was just never enough
Or maybe, oh baby, it wasn’t love at all

Songbird 7. Song of Light
When you travelled to this world one day
Not knowing where to go and how long you’d stay
There were angels standing by you
And they sang you songs of light
Longing for that home in the sky
Is mirrored in the stars behind your eyes
There are angels standing by you
And they sing you songs of light
Coming home
Knowing all
There’ll be angels standing by you
And they’ll sing you songs of light
There’ll be angels standing by you
And they’ll sing you songs of light
