Sing Mercy Now

Added: 30-01-2008

The first time I heard Mercy Now was on an Americana compilation cd. Its words went straight to my heart. It seemed to me that this was a song of great importance. When I learned about the Sing Mercy Now initiative I immediately started thinking about making a contribution to the project. Not until a couple of weeks later did I translate the lyrics to my native language, which is Dutch. My country is not a warzone, nor does it actively make war on other countries (although I do not believe that peace can be created by any army carrying guns and driving tanks, no matter how good its intentions). There is little real poverty here. Still (or maybe even therefore), people do not seem to realise how rich they are and continue to want more, and desperately hold on to what they (think they) own, which unfortunately starts to include the country itself. Tolerance and brotherhood is waning and I feel that something must be done.

White, black, Muslim, Christian, good, evil.... These are mere words created by mankind. We are not alone, we are All One and it is my profound belief that we can experience that unity through music. If I can somehow contribute to the awakening of that conscience by singing a song or two, then that is what I will do.

It's a wrap...

Added: 09-07-2007

It's a wrap. We finished recording 'Songbird' yesterday. And as many artists have undoubtedly experienced before me, the aftermath is somewhat bluesy. For months you have worked on this thing, you have alternately been stunned by your own songwriting abilities and thoroughly depressed by your lack of talent, at times you have wanted to toss the whole thing out the window and at other times you have felt sure that you would at least earn a Grammy nomination with this one. It's a rollercoaster ride, that's what it is.

This said, though I am not a big rollercoaster fan, it has still been a wonderful experience for me to be able to record my very own songs and to produce my own album. Either worthy or unworthy of any Grammy's though it may be, it is my creation and I feel like each and every note and line were written not so much by me but through me. Even if nobody ever listens to them ever again, I can wholeheartedly say I feel blessed and proud that I have had the opportunity and the courage to start living out my heart's desire. (Don't let this stop you from listening to my songs anyway though, they're so nice!).

With love and gratitude,
Sanna Songbird
